Surviving Rip Currents

It’s surf season, and in honor of the nation’s most popular water sport the America’s Most Wanted Safety Center wanted bring your attention to one of the biggest dangers at the beach, rip currents. Rip currents claim over 100 lives per year - don’t let yours be one of them. Follow these tips from The National Weather Service to stay safe at America’s surf beaches:

  • Never swim alone - at the very least, have a friend who can get help.
  • Always swim in view of a lifeguard, no matter how strong a swimmer you may be.
  • If you do get caught in a rip current, do not panic - thrashing around will waste energy.
  • Do not swim against the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current, then diagonally back in to land.
