Does Your Family Have An Emergency Plan?

An emergency can happen to your family at any time. Whether an accidental fire in your home, or as a result of a natural disaster in your area, you could be forced to evacuate, or you could be trapped at home. If you were to lose power, water, or your phone service, would you know what to do? Emergency workers will respond to a scene after a disaster, but depending on the scale they may not be able to reach your family right away. Don’t Become a Heat Related Statistic

The Centers for Disease Control estimates that heat accounts for nearly 700 fatalities every year. With summer temperatures soaring, it sometimes feels as if there is no end in sight.

Some precautions to escape serious physical symptoms due to heat exposure seem obvious but are frequently forgotten or the effects of high temperatures are under estimated. Continue reading Don’t Become a Heat Related Statistic »

“If You See Something, Say Something”: National Night Out Turns 25

Each year, thousands of communities gather together to participate in National Night Out (NNO). On Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 the NNO campaign celebrates its 25th year of mobilizing citizens, law enforcement, neighborhood watch groups, businesses and other local organizations in nearly 10,000 communities.

National Night Out aims to help raise awareness of crime and drug issues in the community. NNO also is a great opportunity for you and your neighbors to build support for neighborhood watch groups, establish a better relationship with the police, and to help send a loud message to criminals in your area that you are fighting back. John Walsh: Takin’ It To The Streets

AMW host John Walsh trains with the FBI in Quantico, VA

I’ve just had some first-hand, close-up exposure to what FBI agents-in-training have to go through. And let me tell you - I loved every minute of it! This month marks the Bureau’s 100th anniversary, and to help celebrate the occasion, I took the AMW crew to the FBI Academy in Quantico, Virginia to shoot a special episode of our show. With our cameras rolling, the FBI’s top trainers let me try my hand at some of what they put agents through. I spent time at the firearms range, moved in on a realistically staged bank robbery with an FBI SWAT squad and even got to rappel down the side of a building in an exercise with the FBI’s Hostage Rescue Team - one of the most elite counter-terrorism units in the world. FBI Know How: Accident Avoidance

For several years, fatal automobile accidents have rivaled firearms as the leading cause of death for federal agents. At the FBI training facility in Quantico, Va., their Tactical Emergency Vehicle Operators Course (TEVOC) teaches drivers how to react quickly and avoid obstacles to make dangerous driving as safe as possible.

When something happens in front of a driver, the typical reaction is to slam on the brakes. But this often leads to losing control of the vehicle and collision.

AMW host John Walsh recently visited this facility and participated in the TEVOC training course. Whether a federal agent or an everyday citizen, when you learn how to respond to an emergency situation by steering around rather than relying on braking, you can maintain control of the vehicle at all times.
