Tina M: I was raped three years ago. Do you think it’s too late to take to court? The police have a report but I was too scared to follow through with it.
JW: First of all, I’m so sorry this happened to you. And I want you to know that you’re not alone in being frightened about going through the legal process – it’s very common for victims to feel scared and alone. According to the Department of Justice, less than half of rape cases are even reported to the police. But although it can be tough, working through the system will let you fight back, something I think all crime victims should do. Reporting the crime might help bring the creep to justice, and get him off the streets before he can hurt anyone else. When you filed your report, it was certainly a step in the right direction. You should know that most states have lengthy or no statutes of limitation for prosecuting rape offenders. So, check with your local law enforcement agencies to see what the law is in your area. And remember: you don’t have to do this alone. The experts recommend finding someone to talk to about your experience; someone close to you. A counselor at the Rape Crisis Hotline (1-800-656-HOPE) can help you get the support you need.
