Deoxyribonucleic acid, more commonly known as DNA, has advanced greatly in recent years making it a valuable tool in solving crimes when biological evidence exists. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, these tests have played a critical role in investigations and solving thousands of cases since the late 1980s. DNA tests allow police to accurately identify both criminals and victims to make sure the right people end up behind bars.
Last year, the Department of Justice launched the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System database, creating a national database for the missing. NamUs uses DNA to help identify missing persons.
In his answer to a viewer’s question about laws, John Walsh discusses his views on a national DNA registry. Check out the Department of Justice’s website to learn more about how DNA is being used to solve crimes.
