According to the FBI, over 1 million cars are stolen each year in the United States. And too often, it’s simply negligence that gives these crooks an opportunity to run off with your car or your possessions. Criminals like Terrence Washington, who has escaped prison 4 times in the last 10 years, could even be using your stolen vehicle to elude police.
But you don’t have to give these thieves an easy opportunity. America’s Most Wanted recently met with a Maryland auto theft task force, and these experts offered up some simple yet important advice that can help you prevent being a victim of these crimes.
- Always keep your windows, doors, and sunroof closed and locked when you leave your car.
- Valuables such as purses, shopping bags, laptops should always be stored out of view in the trunk, or taken out of the car.
- Stolen cars enable criminals to commit other crimes such as robberies or burglaries.
