Make A Difference: Being A Good Witness

Eyewitness testimony is a powerful tool to assist police in finding crooks, and if you are victimized you play an important role in getting cops the clues they need to put the creeps behind bars. Police in Boca Raton, Florida are on the trail of a cold blooded killer who they suspect may be preying on women and children. Through information provided by a witness, police were able to create a composite sketch of the creep they believe may be responsible for these brutal crimes.

In just a split second, you could find yourself face to face with an attacker, but would you be able to help police track down the suspect? Baltimore Police Sergeant Brian Pearson offers some advice that could help you survive a dangerous situation and to provide police with information to help track down your attacker. Look for physical characteristics, such as height, weight, eye color and race or ethnicity. If they are armed, try to identify the type of weapon.

You may not have much time in this very dangerous situation, but any information about the attacker that you are able to pass on to police could be critical to taking the creep off of the streets.

Dear Mr. Walsh,
I admire you because I think what you do every day is great; trying to make America a crime-less place. I am 13 years old and every Saturday I watch your show, and it’s always a shock to me to see how so many crimes like this occur in such a beautiful country like this. The crimes shown on your show aren’t movies or plays, they’re cases that really happened somewhere, sometime near you. I live in Los Angeles, California and in this county alone many crimes happen on a day-to-day basis. Now, imagine how many crimes happen nationwide! My favorite case this year has been the Boca Raton Mall Serial Killer Case, since this was very similar to what happened to you 27 years ago. I felt your pain when I first read that case on the internet a year ago, which is when I started to watch your show. It’s just so incredible to me not being able to know if, when you go out to a place like a store, you might be robbed, sexually abused, kidnapped, or even murdered and then be found in a garbage can days later. I just want to conclude by saying, keep on doing what you’re doing, continuing the manhunt to find the humans who have committed these crimes in the United States; the search for AMERICA’S MOST WANTED!!!

I feel so aweful as a witness. I have the heart and the knowledge, yet I also have brain damage in the hypervenilation area, adding post tramatic stress disorder, No matter what happens(and A LOT happens around here) I just can’t seem to get it right for the officers. I say dark yellow and it was pale blue. My timing can be way off as well. I shake..feel ill… even puke. yet Ican’t just let things happen(when it involves my child and i) Because i’m always sure of one thing… ( What We share even if off center, because of disablity caused by husband’s beatings,) something we share will be the ONE thing they need to help solve the case ….NEVER GIVE UP! I had guns to the head, with trigger’s pulled (used to only intimidate…ive been told this ) Knives to the throat, beatings to the spine and to the face. No bragging or trying to scare anyone, or bring unneeded pity. I am OKAY, With rest and time to rest and think things through..yet? I still want to help bring justice and help to our beloved police officers, i just hope they don’t dispise me for being so horribly inadaquite for them. All energy I have is FIRST spent on my CHILD, then my dwelling home. All else, sadly has to be after. My own MAMA worries for me, for trying to ALSO save the world. Shouldn’t we all?!

I was shocked to learn of this case of suspected serial killer abducting women and children in broad daylight. I have been a single mom for 14 years and often shop and travel alone. I am ALWAYS aware of my surroundings but here are a few additional steps I take for my own safety:

WHEN STAYING IN HOTEL ROOM ALONE: I make sure that when I leave the room to go out at night I leave the television and room lights on, turn on the bathroom light and exhaust fan, close the bathroom door, and put out the DO NOT DISTURB SIGN. The last thing I do is drag a heavy chair as close as possible to the inside of the hotel room door before closing it so that (in theory) I can tell if someone entered the room in my absence, and if so I dont enter the room. Upon my return while if I feel unsafe walking down the halls alone or if anyone is nearby that makes me nervous I pretend to talk on my cell phone so that anyone around me can hear that I am just outside the hotel room door and that I will SEE HIM (or YOU GUYS) in just a few seconds.

When I am alone in SHOPPING MALL PARKING LOTS - if I am scared I do the same thing - pretending to talk on the phone to the people supposedly WAITING IN MY CAR for me - talking loud enough for anyone to hear “Can’t you see me?? I am one car away from you guys - I am sorry I took so long - why dont you get out of the car and come help me carry the bags??”

In both cases anyone within earshot would think that I was just steps away from rejoining one or more of my friends.

I always have my keys out to be ready to either enter my hotel room or to beep my car to unlock it and I lock the door immediately after getting into the car or into my hotel room.

When going to bed at night in a hotel room when travelling I leave the do not disturb sign out and put a heavy chair in front of the door as a makeshift barricade.

AT ANY TIME when I am fearful of my surroundings I am prepared to tell any person that might confront me in a menacing way that for their own good they should just keep on walking - that the area is under police surveillance for local robbery, etc. Anything that will give them the idea that I am trying to tip them off - help them so that they dont get caught up in an investigation.

These might seem like crazy plans but they could save your life or at the least. may very well keep you out of a bad and potentially dangerous situation.

The most important thing is to ALWAYS BE AWARE of your surroundings and who is nearby and ALWAYS BE PREPARED to act.. If you feel uncomfortable DO NOT HESITATE to go past your car or your hotel room door and get to where there are crowds of people. Respect your instincts. BE SAFE!!!
