Dominique J: How can blind kids be safe in a community? I work with visually impaired kids and it would be nice for them to have some type of information on how to be safe outside and at home, because they want to be just like any other kids.
JW: There’s no question that children with special needs need more attention. As if dealing with a disability isn’t hard enough, according to the Administration for Children and Families (ACF), children with disabilities are four times more likely to be victims of abuse and neglect than children without disabilities. Teaching a kid with a disability about safety can require extra time and patience, but it’s important. You can get some help from The National Federation for the Blind. They’ve got a lot of great articles available to help guide parents and caretakers.
