Halloween Can Be Scary…& Safe

Halloween is one of the most exciting holidays for kids. The fun of dressing up, going to parties, and getting tons of candy means that kids have a lot to look forward to. But unfortunately, here at AMW we know that Halloween isn’t always fun and games, and can in fact end up being very dangerous if you don’t take certain precautions. Kids and adults should be aware of some of the risks that exist out on the street on Halloween. Experts from the University of Michigan Trauma Burn Center warn that on Halloween, there is a significant increase in burns, falls, and pedestrian injuries. Kids are more than 4 times as likely to be struck by a car on Halloween than on any other night of the year. So here are some tips from the National Safety Council to help keep your night fun and safe:

  • Young kids should always be accompanied by an adult.
  • Know the route your kids plan to follow, and know the names of everyone they are going out with.
  • Teach kids to stop only at homes that are well lit, and never go inside of a stranger’s home.
  • Make sure children know not to eat any candy until they get home and have it inspected by an adult.

When choosing a costume, keep the following things in mind:

  • Always be sure to use fire resistant materials in a costume.
  • A mask can block a child’s field of vision, keeping them from seeing trouble or obstacles they could trip over. Use face-paint instead.
  • Avoid sharp objects as part of costumes; try to use cardboard or other flexible materials to make costume knives or swords.
  • If going out after dark, children should carry a flashlight, and have reflective material attached to their costumes.

Think smart when getting ready to take your kids out this Halloween. Taking a few simple few safety precautions in advance and while out on the street can help make sure you and your kids have a fun time.
