According to the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC), illicit drug use among teens is decreasing. But unfortunately, prescription drug abuse is on the rise. Parents can take an active role in drug and alcohol abuse prevention by setting a positive example for their teens. Joselle Shea of the NCPC offers a few basic suggestions for how parents can be positive role models for teens:
- Drink responsibly.
- Don’t serve alcohol to minors.
- Don’t abuse drugs or medication.
Additionally, parents should know who their kid’s friends are and where they hang out. Make sure your kids know your stance on drugs and alcohol, and set some enforceable consequences for breaking the rules, like revoking driving or cell phone privileges.
The NCPC reminds teens that feeling high for a minute is not worth the pain of a lifetime. For more information about how you can help your teens avoid negative influences, check out the NCPC’s site for some downloadable brochures.
