A pandemic is a global disease outbreak. A flu pandemic ensues when a new influenza virus strain develops for which people have little or no resistance. The problem with new strains is that people haven’t developed immunities against them, and our current vaccines can’t predict or protect against them either because we don’t know what that strain is.
According to the Red Cross, statistics show that the world is ripe for another pandemic. But the experts tell us that there are things that we can do to right now prepare and protect ourselves.
- Get a Kit. In the case of a pandemic, your typical disaster preparedness kit should be extended to include several weeks worth of supplies. This includes water, medicine, hand sanitizers, gloves and tissues. The health care system may be overwhelmed and may require sick individuals to be cared for and quarantined at home.
- Make a plan. In the event of a mass influenza, schools, events and public transportation may be shut down. Prepare your family for social disruptions and make an alternative emergency plan.
- Be informed. Be aware of the status of the pandemic in the media, and follow updates provided by local public health authorities.
