Protect Yourself Against Prostate Cancer

Prostate cancer is the second most common type of cancer, and the second leading cause of cancer death in American men. The American Cancer Society estimates the number of affected men will be approaching nearly 220,000 in 2007.

1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer during his lifetime. But with early diagnosis, prostate cancer is highly treatable and has a very low fatality rate. September is National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, so this year if you haven’t already, start keeping an eye out for signs of prostate cancer. Making sure to get frequent checkups with your physician can keep you out of harm’s way. Here are some symptoms of prostate cancer to look out for:

  • A need to urinate frequently, especially at night.
  • Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back, hips, or upper thighs.
  • Blood in urine or semen.
  • Painful or burning urination.
  • Difficulty urinating or holding back urination.
  • Weak or interrupted flow of urine.

Check out the American Cancer Society’s website for more information about prostate cancer. And if you or someone you know is experiencing any of these symptoms, the Prostate Cancer Foundation offers a guide to learn available options at each stage of the disease.
