Purpose Over Pain: Bringing An End to Violence

Over the last several years, Chicago has emerged as one of the most violent cities in America. This year so far, the city has already tallied 113 murder victims, and much of this violence has found young victims.

In 2007, a few Chicago-area parents who refused to sit on the sidelines of a city overrun with crime and gun violence launched Purpose Over Pain. Comprising several area parents and loved ones of murdered children, the organization provides a network of support to grieving family members and aims to create a significant impact in education of community youth on the dangers of gun violence.

The organization focuses on three main areas:

  • Advocating for good gun policies and safety efforts at local, state and national levels with an aim of reducing gun violence among the youth.
  • Provide crisis support to families who’ve been touched by gun violence.
  • Public education of the youth and community about the impact of gun violence from personal perspectives.

Despite the suffering brought into the lives of those involved, the members of the POP are turning tragedy into a positive force, and showing the impact that can be made through dedication and commitment to the community.

I know this is needed in communities all across America. I would ask that you also remember the survivors of violent crimes as well. Back in 1992 my daughter was kidnapped, raped, beaten, and stabbed 17 times. By the grace of God we still have her. At that time in my community no one, not even the professionals knew how to treat her or the family. We had to heal on our own. Their was a group back then fighting for the Victims Rights Bill and I did my part but it was difficult because those involved lost a loved one. They thought we were lucky. We were but yet we were not. So my plea is to also help those families suffering from the violence inflicted on them with no where to turn. Thank you for all that you are doing and God bless.
