Each year, thousands of communities around the county rally citizens to fight crime in their neighborhoods. Through partnerships with the National Sheriff’s Association, the Bureau of Justice Assistance, and the Department of Justice, the National Crime Prevention Council has organized the Celebrate Safe Communities (CSC) initiative to promote crime fighting in your neighborhood.
This initiative helps communities to connect with other groups across the country, and to share new ideas for neighborhood watch activities. Although Crime Prevention Month and Celebrate Safe Communities activities don’t officially kick off until October, it’s important to register and started as early as possible. In addition to just getting a jump on organizing your community’s crime fighting activities, there are many additional benefits to registering your group and registering early.
- Registering gives you access to advice and assistance from the NCPC, and the National Sheriff’s Association to guide you as you are organizing your activities.
- Organizations with registered events have the opportunity to compete for national recognition and awards for outstanding CSC activities.
- Local Watch groups, youth groups, faith based organizations, businesses and civic organizations working with local law enforcement are all encouraged to register their prevention activities with the NCPC.
- Celebrate Safe Communities runs from October 2-4 this year, but depending on the needs of your community, events may be held throughout October and beyond.
By participating in CSC, your community gains access to tools and tips that help you establish crime fighting activities that keep your community involved all year long. Check out the Celebrate Safe Communities site to register your activities, for crime-fighting resources, more information, and to share your ideas on how to get the most out of community crime fighting efforts.
