Create An Effective And Successful Neighborhood Watch

Oftentimes a watch group organizes around a specific problem or incident, such as an increase in burglaries or area assaults, which prompts neighbors to react. But when the crisis is taken care of or an arrest is made, group activity taper off. This response undermines the benefits of the Neighborhood Watch. A successful watch group understands that the purpose of their organization is to foster long lasting alliances and community amongst neighbors and law enforcement, creating a safer environment for our children and families.

Here are some helpful tips for a successful and enduring Neighborhood Watch:

  • Hold regular meetings to help residents get to know each other and to collectively decide upon program strategies and activities.
  • Consider linking with an existing organization, such as a citizens’ association, community development office, tenants’ association, or a housing authority.
  • Involve everyone – young and old, single and married, renter and homeowner. Reach out to non-English speaking members of your community. Local government agencies or religious institutions for translation services and crime watch materials in order to include immigrant communities in your efforts.
  • Gain Support from the police or sheriff’s office. These agencies are the major sources of information on local crime patterns, home security, other crime prevention education, and crime reporting.
  • Gather the facts about crime in your neighborhood. Check police reports, do victimization surveys, and learn residents’ perceptions about crime. Accurate information can reduce fear of crime.
  • Physical conditions like abandoned cars or overgrown vacant lots contribute to crime. Sponsor cleanups, encourage residents to beautify the area, and ask them to turn on outdoor lights at night.

It is essential to celebrate the success of the effort and recognize volunteers’ contributions through such events as awards, annual dinners, and parties. To help meet community needs, Neighborhood Watches can sponsor meetings that address broader issues such as drug abuse, gangs, self-protection tactics, isolation of the elderly, crime in the schools, and rape prevention.

Check out the National Crime Prevention Council website for more information on how you can make a difference in your neighborhood.

My neighbor on the 1st. floor got raped, the ambulance picked her up and the police knocked on his door.latest info that my neighbor told me that they have to get in touch with the alleged rapist to get his side of his story. The whole street is like a graveyard. My children are terrified to go outside, I really dont know what to do to protect my neighborhood, the police seem not to interested in this case. My neighbor told me that the officer said he’s working on a homcide case, which is his priorty. I feel the children’s safety is in danger. I dont want to see a child missing or my children missing or raped.PLEASE direct me.

From what we have gone through, your neighbor could be full of poo-poo in telling you this. Also”,it is” that the police are NOT going to tell things to a neighbor about a case. Please do not give up hope and do not give in.There is a saying, ONE WAY NOT TO LOSE YOUR RIGHTS -IS TO KEEP USING THEM. I’m familiar with no safe neighborhood place for my child and her friends. There is a drug house run by a grandma, where the young men do her work for her, any grandchildren play games out loud about the cops (pigs) they scream. yet the parents are in and out of jail for drugs. or on the wanted list locally, for drug or other things. PLEASE don’t give up. It seems like you could call the police yourself (anon) ask what can be done to help kids in a very bad neighborhood. Call Juvinille, call cps as a concerned neighbor on where to be connected, for help go through your phone book, like I did. JUST DON’t give up> yOU CARE, YOU CAN START A CHANGE. It’S amazing what one person’s heart can start! Not do all on your own. But with one person’s care, others will finally start to get braver.

I am the vice president of our local neighborhood watch here in Shawnee, Oklahoma. I was wondering how important it is for the police to recognize a neighborhood watch.
