Flooding is possible in every state and flash floods can happen any time of year. A watch is issued when the conditions are right in a particular area for a flood. Be aware of how to respond and be ready to act quickly in the event of a flood. A flood occurs after prolonged rainfall over several days or intense rainfall in a smaller period of time when the rain falls faster than the ground can saturate or gutters can accommodate.
In the winter and early spring floods can be caused by melting snow and rain. In the spring and summer severe thunderstorms, hurricanes, tropical storms and tropical cyclones can bring heavy and intense rainfall to the coastal and inland states.
Flash floods can occur within in six hours of a heavy rain, after a dam or levee failure, or following a sudden release of water held by an ice or debris jam. People are often unprepared.
