Carbon monoxide is a silent killer. The gas is colorless, odorless, and inhalation creates symptoms that are easily mistaken for common illnesses. Carbon Monoxide poisoning kills about 65 people every year according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Victims of poisoning from portable generators die never knowing what hit them.
Follow these tips from the CPSC and keep tragedy from happening by sharing them.
- Never keep a portable generator indoors, that goes for the garage and the basement too.
- Make sure not even a single side of the generator faces your home - porches, patios, open doors and windows can still let the gas in.
- Keep aware of other sources of carbon monoxide.
- Never bring a grill into your home or leave an oven on. Charcoal briquettes and gas stoves give off carbon monoxide, and should never be used for heating purposes.
Follow those simple rules and install a carbon monoxide detector and you can sleep knowing you’ll wake up in the morning.
