Prepare Now For An Earthquake Later

Earthquakes are rare, but that’s no reason to not be prepared. When they strike, they can be very dangerous. Past earthquakes have leveled cities, destroyed all types of buildings and killed anyone unprepared in the wake of the damage.

Prepare your family for an earthquake by making a home earthquake plan. Choose a safe place in every room, under a desk or table where nothing can fall on you and make sure these areas are always accessible. It’s also a good idea to ask a contractor about bolting large furniture to the walls.

When an earthquake strikes, use these tips from the American Red Cross to ensure you and your loved ones make it out.

  • Drop, cover and hold on. Stay indoors until the shaking stops and you’re sure it’s safe to exit. Stay away from windows.
  • If you are in bed, stay there. Protect your head with a pillow.
  • If you are outdoors, move away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop to the ground.
  • If you are in a car, slow down and drive to a clear place. Stay in the car.

When the shaking stops, try to put out small fires and turn off the gas if you smell gas leaking (Consult a professional to help you turn it back on.). Every earthquake comes with aftershocks and you should use the same guidelines for any shocks that follow, no matter how small.

How absolutely scarey. What about having a waterproof bag of important papers, first aid material, and a few food goodies. Please. If possible, is there a list of things to have by your door incase of an emergancy? Or even a grouping
of papers and things to keep at a mother’s house?
We have talked about this.
