Take Action In Your Community For Crime Prevention Month

For over 20 years, the National Crime Prevention Council (NCPC) has promoted October as Crime Prevention Month. And each year, government agencies, businesses, schools, youth groups and many other organizations have taken the opportunity to highlight community achievements and to push for new partnerships in the ongoing fight against crime on the streets. These events are not only focus on crime prevention, but also in building awareness of victims and how others can participate and take action during this month, as well as the rest of the year.

Many communities tend take the opportunity to center some of their activities on Halloween safety, and this is a great way to get kids involved. The NCPC offers some helpful hints for how you can make the most out of this year’s Crime Prevention Month, and spread the word in your community.

  • Request a photo opportunity with McGruff the Crime Dog through your local police.
  • Ask local police to host a community crime prevention event with McGruff, invite local press and media.
  • Write your local press and media and suggest they feature stories with crime prevention tips throughout October
  • Post crime prevention tips on community websites and newsletters.
  • Sponsor poster or essay contests to get community youth involved.
  • Host a Halloween safety event for kids in the community.

Check out the NCPC website for more information and resources regarding Crime Prevention Month. Get in touch with your local police or prevention organizations to find out how you can get involved in your community.

If you already have plans, what activities are you or your community involved in this month?
