There are many common household items that can be dangerous if used incorrectly. Fortunately, we know to stay away from things like knives, unprescribed medication or dangerous cleaning chemicals. But when it comes our pets, they can’t differentiate between a safe and unsafe use for things lying around. A good rule of thumb is to taking the same precautions for your pets as you would with a small child.
Here are some guidelines from The Humane Society on household items that should be kept out of reach of pets:
- Rodent poisonings and insecticides. These substances are the most common sources of pet poisoning.
- Food intended for humans: Chocolate, onions, onion powder, alcoholic beverages, yeast dough, coffee grounds and beans, salt, macadamia nuts, tomatoes, potatoes, rhubarb, and avocados are most dangerous.
- Items that may cause choking. Things with small parts like chicken bones, string, yarn, rubber bands, dental floss can cause chocking or intestinal blockage.
- Medications intended for humans. Assume that anything in you medicine cabinet, including pain killers, cold remedies, vitamins, diet pills, and any ointments or creams should be kept out of reach.
- Chemicals for outdoor use. If your pet has walked on fertilizer or de-icing salts, wash his feet to prevent him from licking the chemical off.
- Items intended for pet use. Things like like over-the-counter flea and tick remedies or extra-fortified kibble may end up being harmful. Always consult your veterinarian before using any product on your pet.
Keep in mind that a lot of these items wind up in the trash. Make sure that the trash cans in your house and yard are secured at all times so that pets can’t come across things they aren’t supposed to have.

I sometimes joke…. They are my beasts of burden. Non containable,( running my place like they pay rent or something.:) Yet pet safety is no joke. All electrical cords up, or unplugged while you are not available to keep check on.(Puppy power to chew every and anything.) Don’t forget those wonderful chew bones we buy at the store., NEVER go anywhere without taking them and putting them on top of your frig. Puppies and or older dogs can and do choke on the splintters. Also, do you know doggie cpr, or even how to hymlic(spelling stinks) A dog choking?. There are books at your local library that can teach all.:). Your Vet. will help also! My older dog has cast-iron stomach, but even she had her limit when the bad food thing came around. She lived, the vet who saved her, died of a heart attack not even 2 months later….I really miss HIM. The biggest thing is ,don’t close your eyes. No matter how tired, don’t forget to put up or put away. After all, no matter how human our friends act and behave. They will and are still showing animal traits(sadly because they are).
