Outsmart Scammers: Identity Protection Toolkit

ID Theft Protection Tips

Millions of Americans each year become victims of identity theft. It’s becoming the fastest growing crime in the United States, costing consumers nearly $5 billion a year. Most victims don’t even realize their identity has been compromised until months after the crime has occurred, more than enough time for a lot of damage to be done. Once an identity is stolen, there is little the victim can do: taking control of your personal information is the best way to prevent the crime from ever taking place. Don’t become a victim; take action and protect your personal information.

Here are a few simple steps you can take to get started:

  • Never carry your Social Security card — leave it in a safe place at home.
  • Never make credit card purchases online on an unsecured server that doesn’t use the https:// protocol.
  • Don’t leave bill payments in unlocked mailboxes for pick up — drop them off at the post office.
  • Shred all credit card offers and any other documents that include your personal information, like bank statements, medical statements, tax returns, and canceled checks.
  • Don’t respond to e-mails or pop up windows requesting you to reveal your personal information.
  • Routinely check your credit reports for errors. The three major credit reporting companies provide one free credit report each year. Visit annualcreditreport.com to get yours.
  • Review all bank statements and bills to be sure there has been no suspicious activity.
  • If your wallet or purse is stolen, immediately cancel all credit cards and contact the credit reporting companies to place security alerts on your accounts. This will prevent thieves from applying for credit in your name.

For more information about identity theft and what steps you can take to take control, check out the Federal Trade Commission’s (FTC) web site.

I really enjoy the show for the past umpteen years. Don’t let those bad boys and bad girls rest for one minute while they are on the run.

I watch AMW on Dish Network, from FOX Channel at 8p.m. every Saturday night.

Thanks for the great job AMW has done for our safety.

John.

Dear John Walsh and AMW,

What a relief it is to have AMW working for the innocent people of the USA and abroad. We Thank You for a “Job Well Done” and for the continuance of AMW in fighting crime and protecting our Children.
We feel that the Public MUST get involved to help Law Enforcement in fighting Crime and getting these “Idiots” off the street that harm our Children and the Innocent people. I, personally, take part in helping Law Enforcement in calling them whenever I see something out of the ordinary, or someone possibly driving under the influence. The Public MUST get involved, be aware of your surroundings, watch people closely when out and about, stay in contact with your Children and DO NOT go with a stranger if you do not know them or feel uneasy with them. This is not an age of walking down the road and taking a dip in the ol’ pond. This is an age of Awareness! Not only for our children but for the Elderly as well. Every person MUST take care of their Family in protecting them by being AWARE! Family takes care of Family, Friends take care of Friends, and with the Great Help from AMW and Law Enforcement, the Innocent people can fight Crime and put the “Idiots” behind bars. But, EVERYONE MUST BE AWARE AT ALL TIMES!

Thanks You AMW for being here for us all,
Dan Benscoter

To help prevent identy theft, we should leave our Social Security Cars in a safe place. What about the Senior Citizens? Medicare uses the Social Security Number for its ID Number unlike private insurance companies. Can you help us get this Changed?
Thanks

Nancy
June 16, 2007 at 10:19 pm

Not only does the Medicare card show the SSN for its ID number, but so do Military ID cards as well as the military insurance programs.

Good question regarding identity theft. However, your answer has helped perpetuate a popular misconception. Only 4% of all identity theft has been traced to the mail. While the Postal Service does promote several of the actions mentioned on the program, mail it is not the source of the majority of identity theft.

dear John and readers
i think that congress should make for people with social securities (a pin code like you have on ATM cards etc but with more digits) that would be your private identity that will lock your social security of being used by any one else
congress should place big penalty for those who trick others to sneak out their pin code
this pin code you will be able to be receive only by going personally to your local police department with all of your identifications and make your own pin
no bank account or credit cards account would be able to be opened except if you call into that system of the government to Authorize it and punch in the numbers trough you dialing it from were ever you want by phone

and that would put a quick and easy end to all the identity thefts in the US

that idea could be should be worked out better with more techniques to it it just a basic idea to give a sense that has to be done to stop identity crime of growing
(all those 3D identity Monitoring web sites that watch what ever is reported to your credit bureau and notifies you, are as dangers as giving out your identity to some one you don’t know)

You have this safety tip listed under ID theft:
“If your wallet or purse is stolen, immediately cancel all credit cards and contact the credit reporting companies to place security alerts on your accounts. This will prevent thieves from applying for credit in your name.” I work in a Bank and I do NOT see anything mentioned to the victims about reporting the loss of wallet with ID, credit cards & bank debit cards to their financial institutions immediately. This is extremely important as a lot of people unwittingly give the thieves the “key” to their bank accounts by writing their PIN on the back of the debit card, or keeping it in their wallet with the bank debit card. Also, most banks only ask for the SS# for phone transfers, or to open accounts. Please make sure you list on your tips that their bank accounts may also be compromised and to call their financial institutions to report this right away. I cannot begin to tell you about the large amount of fraud loss that occurs to banks because of lost/stolen wallets. Thank you!!

With regards to ID theft….as someone who use to work with a bank in their fraud department, never leave your car doors open. Too often, people leave their purses in visible areas. I’m a big fan of the show (never miss it). Be careful online also of companies which they may say they offer financial services for free….but later ask you for your bank acct # or other personal info…sometimes these are scams!! Most inportantly…use your common sense..most things that seem too good to be true…usually is….even on the internet…such as lottery scam….they also try to steal your identity.

Dear John Walsh,
I want to tell you that you are doing a good job,as far as adam walsh foundation.I have to tell you that we picked up another person that molested a 11-year old and a 12 year -old.And he will be in prison for a very long time. And that is my brother.I feel sorry for his wife that he lied to her for 36-years. Now I help put people away for that. I also find missing kids. Yours truly Sharon K.Cox

I still see people leaving their purses hanging over the back rest behind them while seated in restaurants or keeping it under their desks in their Offices in high transient traffic areas. I’ve even seen people go to restaurants during peak hours and use their unattended purses to hold a table while they get their food! Not to mention folks that warm up their unoccupied cars in their driveways while they’re inside getting ready for work!? Another no-no is leaving your garage wide open with unattended tools, mowers, (access door to your home!) while out back doing yard work. How about the public parks where people walk their dogs and leave their cars with purses, ipods and cameras in plain view? What gives folks?? Please folks, us cops can’t be everywhere. Use common sense and prevent opportunity!!!!!! Rock on Mr. Walsh!

I think we are doing alot better in this day and time, but there is still alot to do,because there is also more things out there then most people realize. Thanks for being on t.v. and making people
see some of the things that happen.People tend to forget alot of things during the week, and alittle reminder from your show puts us back in reality.I also have had ID theft.I now have to go to court over it,not only are the people that steal your Id and use it are bad,but the credit card company’s are just as bad and they don’t care about who done this sp[ending on your behalf but that someone has to pay them back for all their money that they put out for you,or whomever used your credit. That is what I’m going through.Tough world huh.Anyways again,THANKS for being there where it counts for us all.Your show is truely amazing.

There’s one more step missing from this guide that would pertain to online shopping. Online Shopping is a huge and ever growing market where personal information flies across the huge highway of the world wide web. All legitimate shopping websites use data encryption to make sure that they are the only ones who view it. (Note that the encryption doesn’t mean it’s legitimate) This does help a lot but it won’t stop anyone from viewing your keystrokes with a trojan horse. (computer virus) The point being is that to shop safely online you must always have an antivirus program and a firewall installed, updated and running at all times. It’s also advisable to have anti spyware software installed as well. NEVER store any personal information in your computer files for any reason. Regularly delete cookies and temporary internet files right down to the offline ones. (Note some security software offers file shredder which writes over deleted data making it unrecoverable) Lastly of course perform a virus scan at least weekly, best right before you shop online. Oh and one extra note for you bank card users, STOP and check your banks liability policy. There are laws protecting you from excessive liability with credit cards, (Not to exceed $50 if you report fraud within two buisness days of your statement) but not for debit cards.

I have been saying I believe I am a victim of ID theft and I feel it has gotten to the point where the culprits want to harm me my friends and my family so they won’t get exposed. I am a writer and lived with a many that had lots of people over at my home while I was at work I believe one of his friends took my writings and created someone else an identity and she is getting all of the credit. This is so devastating that I feel my immediate family is involved too. They have tried to have me get committed and on drugs. I fear for my life and want assistance to get me away from here. I do have family members that move away and now I see why. I am the only on to graduate from a four year college and succeed at life. While others are on drugs and work low income jobs. I want to get my stories out, my name has been smeared by all of this and the worst part is I dont have proof besides I see my work all around me and I know I was the first to say that should be done. I even believe my family is part of a sexual assualt thing with the minors in our family. Need your guidance and help soon. contact me by email since i feel I cant trust anyone here.

Hello Mr. Walsch, my name is Greg, and my wife and I watch your show every chance we get. If I can’
t catch it, I record it on my dvr…..it’s a wonderful thing….technoligy!!!! My brother’s name was Adam, and he died of AIDS, due to a pedaphile’s urges. I knew him and didn’t even know he was a homosexual. He was an old man, with two dogs, and was a neighbor in an apt. complex. At 17 yrs. of age, my brother was diagnosed with HIV. My only sibling. We were 15 months apart. He died in 1995, and I am still devastated. He was my best friend in the whole world, and this person took him from us without a second thought. I still cry for him every so often, along with my wife, who lost her younger brother to AIDS also. Anyway, I was extremely close to my brother, who looked just like me. And NOT A DAY GOES BY, that I don’t miss, or think about my brother. And the kicker is, that this man had died from the virus, before we could bring him to justice. When the authorities traced it to this man, it was too late. I THINK HE GOT OFF EASY!!! I probably would have done MUCH worse, and in eventuallity, would have gone to prison for doing something to this freak. Brother lost his life, and I would have lost my freedom, due to a PREDATOR!!!!!! GO GET EM’ MR. WALSCH!!!!

Simple principle that I have used is quite helpful. If it is to good to be true. Well, most likely it is fraud. Crooks count on you being greedy or not exercising good judgment. Just consider matters in a calm manner. Don’t be pressured. Take Care and use common sense.
