No that’s not a mistake, our headline actually means something. Translation: For your information, Mom over shoulder, parents are watching, scratching my head in disbelief…if you know what I mean. In TXT. TXT is not some exotic island in the South Pacific.TXT is the abbreviation for text. Text is the shorthand your kids are speaking online and on their phones. It’s a whole new world of technology and you’ll be left out if you don’t catch up. Communication is the key to keeping your kids safe while they use the latest technology.
The popularity of instant messaging, Internet chat rooms and text messaging has created a snappy new language to give users the ability to communicate quickly. Why do you think they call it instant messaging?
Technology has opened a world of possibilities some of which can be dangerous. These days, kids have instant access not only to their friends but also to a whole lot of slimy characters lurking online. The more you know, the better equipped you’ll be to keep an eye on exactly what your kids are doing and saying.
When was the last time you IM-ed your kid? Do you even know their screen name? No doubt you’ll score points with your teenager by speaking their language. At AMW, we’re dedicated to keeping the Internet a safe, fun place for kids to hang out. But it’s you parents who are on the front lines of this generational battle. Here’s some ammunition to help you out; a downloadable list of chat lingo so you can open the lines of communication:

One of the best episodes yet.
Love the show and a loyal watcher of the show and the streets for these criminals
Also I would like to know where I can get a copy of the Parents and kids Internet contracts.
I have 2 children that use the Internet and chat quite often on it and would like to set ground rules for them and my wife and I to use while they are on the Internet. and hopefully they will not be one of those young children that get exploited.
Again tonight’s show was the best on getting us informed on what to watch for to keep our eyes open to children predators.
And on how to spot a possible predator.
Thanks again John Walsh for all your hard work and for your “Geeks” that work as hard as you do.
Keep up the great job

From a kid
This comment may be considered redundant, but I hope some find it helpful:
Most of these I had never seen before, but a few are common (like brb for be right back and btw for by the way.) Some were not mentioned, which I have often seen and used, such as ‘cba,’ ‘bbl,’ etc. But one thing not mentioned at all is ‘1337′ speak or ‘leet’ speak which is a lot more complicated for the majority of parents to figure out, so some kids try to use it for others to not know what they’re saying. Ex. “(4/\/ `/0|_| 5|>34|internet options>under “temporary internet files” click “settings” then “view files.” If you know they have been on the internet, and the history and files are empty, then they have cleared it. You can always get blocks for your computer, but your child may be smart enough to use a proxy website. So block the proxy websites, but they may be smart enough to use a proxy server (an ip and port that you can type into tools>internet options>connections>advanced>use a proxy server.) You can also find a lot of freeware keyloggers* and chat monitors online if you’re still very concerned, but those are a form of spyware that may be unsafe to install, and, as spyware, it slows the computer. And if your child is smart enough to figure out that you’ve installed a keylogger, they may not trust you again. But if you have that much reason to believe they’re chatting with a pedofile, that’s a sacrifice you might be willing to take, but, like I said, any spyware is risky to install. Anyway, sorry for the long comment and sorry if it’s redundant, I just hope it helps some people.
*This should only be used to monitor computers to keep them safe. Do not use them for illegal purposes. I personally believe that these steps should only be a last resort if you have proof.
I like the idea of the internet safety contract, I believe that’s the best idea. Personally, as a kid and/or computer nerd, I’m online a lot and I learn a lot about the internet. I chat often, but never give out any personal information. I never give out my personal info, just general info, and I only tell my age to those who I know are my age as well (because they have webcams, and I trick them into doing something like looking at the computer closer, to ensure it’s a live feed.) But I never use my real name. I ensure that I’m safe online, and I have a lot of “disposable” emails, so if a pedofile were to encounter me, I would “vanish” to them. The good thing about messengers these days is the ability to easily block somebody. Once again, sorry for the long comment, I just hope it helps someone.
Melissa
Very good info! I never knew all of these!

well for the concerned parents i will help u out with the lingo i am 17 and pretty much know all the lingo or chat words out their. for the guy that asked what’s 4/20 in hitlers birth day and is the day almost all the kids go out and party and get baked or smoke weed. and for the other concerned parent that asked what the numbers like 55 or 686 is a new way of txt so no body know what you are talking about exept the person you are talking to. Is only used by people with cell phones because is easy to under stand. the numbers in your cell phone has letter which make the number represent a letter. ex. is 58746 wich means let’s go some were and 41 which means hi and its hard to under stand but after you get the hang of it is kind of fun, my friends and me use it so teachers dont know what we are talking about. theirs other way that kid communicate like scrabbling and numbering. which are other way to chat. if you need any help on any of the lingo just send me an email and i will help you out. (oh and thank my mom for making me do this.)

420 does mean marijauna! It’s the code kids use to say their going to get high/they want to get high. It’s also Hitlers b’day, & the anniversary of the Columbine High School Massacre. I’m close with my friends 15 yr. old daughter & she tells me what all the codes mean.
Kim
I’m all for the advances in technology, but the fact that it’s causing a drop in basic skills needed if that technology ever fails is just scaring the heck out of me. For example, if you go back and read some of the comments left by the younger generation, there is quite an obvious need for more spelling/grammar classes in school. (Or more practice at home!) All of these “TXT” messages are causing many children to forget how to CORRECTLY spell! The other piece of technology that is scary is calculators. My 10-year old son was REQUIRED to have one upon entering the 5th grade! What the heck?!? I remember when you were punished if you were caught with one! Does anybody under the age of, say, 21 even know how to do long division anymore? What effect does this have, you may ask? Well, just go to any fast food restaurant (or any store that employs young people, for that matter) and let’s pretend that your total is $10.56. You hand the clerk $21.06. I can see some of you scratching your heads right now! Can anybody still do this kind of math in their heads? First of all, the clerk is going to stop and look at you as if you’ve lost your mind. The total is only $10.56, a $20 bill would cover it, so why are you handing them more than the $20? “Just punch it in, please” I tell the bewildered clerk. Ha! Lo and behold, my change is a neat $10.50. “Wow” the clerk says. “How did you do that?” No, I’m not a mathematician, I just remember the things I learned in school. The next generation is going to be completely lost if we ever have a power outage for more than a few hours. All businesses will grind to a halt because nobody can run them without a computer. Spelling and grammar have taken a nosedive since kids are not remembering how a word SHOULD be spelled, but how it should be abbreviated in order to make a message to their friends shorter. No wonder the world is laughing at us as a nation! I know this was a long comment, and I apologize, but I firmly believe that we, as parents, have the responsibility to MAKE SURE our kids get the education that they NEED, not the education that they WANT. My son and I do long division and spelling lessons EVERY DAY. He WILL be prepared for the REAL WORLD someday. I know I’m not the most popular mom right now, but he does recognize the fact that he can do things that his classmates cannot. He has even begun to show them how to do long division and “show his work” on the math problems! Now THAT makes for one proud mama!

Hi everyone. I LOVE the show and just wanted to share with you my experience with protecting my three kids online. They all frequent chats and use Instant messaging and I needed some way to monitor them. A family member told me to buy Bsafe Online and I did two months ago. I now monitor ALL of their instant messaging exchanges. With this software I have thwarted TWO predators trying to meet my daughter. With law enforcement, we are going to try and physically catch one of them. I would recommend highly this software with a feature called PredAlert!!!
Thanks much for your show and continued efforts to keep our children safe!!!!

belle monitors all her children’s instant message exchanges. i think that’s great, whether or not her children know.
it seems people have forgotten that parents are supposed to make and enforce the rules and children should be expected to follow them.
when my son was 16 i found some unacceptable material on our computer. i told him flat out (even though he already knew) that he would not be accessing anything unacceptable while living in my home, while using my computer(s), while he was still underage. he is 21 now and would not think of accessing anything i won’t appreciate when he comes to visit. he’s told me he doesn’t even on his own computer because when i confronted him those 5 years ago, it caused him to think a bit about why, exactly, he needed to do what he had in the first place. he decided it had just been for the thrill. the getting away with something, but once we had talked and i had laid out the rules clearly and calmly, he appreciated that i cared enough to risk him getting mad.
being a parent can lead to being a friend, but the parent part comes first. help them to understand things and grow up responsible, with a full understanding of the gravity of becoming their own authority figure, so that they can be strong adults.

I just wanted to say WOW!!

I was once a short text user but i was starting to fail school, so i had to relearn how to spell and even 3 years afterwards i still cant spell properly, so parents, caregivers and teachers I think that we should teach the children how to spell properly instead of them failing like i was. It would make a huge difference for there future.
