Ask John Walsh: Making It Home Safely

Walking alone at night can be very dangerous if you aren’t taking the proper precautions; safety should always be your first priority. John Walsh has some advice to help you use your “street smarts” to stay alert and aware, and to avoid becoming another crime-related statistic.

  • Take note of your surroundings, and who’s around you. Don’t be distracted, and pay attention.
  • Use well-lighted bus stops, and try to arrange to have a friend meet you.
  • Don’t be embarrassed to yell, “Leave me alone,” if someone hassles you.
  • Be aware of who gets off at your stop. If you feel nervous, get back on the bus or walk directly to a place where there are other people.
  • Never display cash or valuables like an mp3 player. They may make you a target.
  • Walk confidently and stay calm. If you think you are being followed, change direction or cross the street.

Remember, always trust your instincts. If something makes you uneasy, go with your feeling.

I’ve been taught..to never have head phones on while out alone. You need to pay attention to who is behind you, and ears listening certainly helps. Or music off, kinda trick the bad…this works:) Agreed…never be afraid to yell. always have someone know where you will be and when you should arrive back. cell or trac phones are very helpful… agree again…never show or display anything of money value. also a problem I see all the time. I was taught to never display money… count it while in the bathroom stall. place what you need for each part of your journey in different pockets or places on you. NEVER display cash or even cards. As a once crossing Guard, I taught and told the children all the time to always walk with a purpose. never read or try to do homework while walking. Don’t have music blasting in your ears, you wouldn’t be able to hear anyone approaching. Have a walk phone system with family and or friends that the parents have given you permission to contact and receive help help. Yell, go to any business available. I’m 43 and still have gone into busineses(sp) and asked for help, when people got too creepy for even me. Intuition, if a sitution doesn’t feel right. It Is NOT right. go to nearest open people filled place and never be afraid to ask for help.
