According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), an estimated 9,200 fireworks-related injuries were reported in U.S. hospitals in 2006. Almost 6,400 injuries were reported between June 16th and July 16th. Irresponsible fireworks use can result in burns, lost limbs, and even death. If you set off fireworks, follow these simple tips to prevent tragedy:
- Fireworks are dangerous, always read the directions thoroughly.
- Misjudgment of when a firework is truly done firing has caused thousands of injuries. Make absolutely certain that once a firework is lit, no one handles it until it has been doused with water.
- Do not use professional grade fireworks. They are highly dangerous and illegal.
- Steer clear of fireworks sold in generic or plain packaging. They are probably illegal.
- Keep children away from fireworks, even sparklers. Sparklers can burn at up to 5000 degrees.
