According to the Centers for Disease Control, there are more than 700 bicycle-related deaths in the United States, and another half million injuries, each year. With concern for the environment and gas prices increasingly on our minds, more and more of us are opting for bicycles as an option for getting around town.
After a tragedy such as the untimely death of Alice Swanson, a cyclist killed Tuesday on her way to work in Washington, D.C.’s Dupont Circle, we are reminded of the real dangers that do exist for bicycles on the road.
When getting on your bike, safety should always be a prime concern in order to try to avoid serious injury. Wearing the proper safety equipment is important for riders of all ages in reducing injuries, but the experts remind us that in many cases a rider’s actions and reactions are just as important in avoiding an accident.
The League of American Bicyclists offer a few tips so you can safely share the road with others:
- When riding on the road, always follow the same rules that apply to motorists. Follow all traffic signs and signals, and use hand signals to notify drivers of your intentions.
- Ride Predictably. Always ride in the furthest right lane that heads in your direction, and don’t swerve in between cars.
- Wear brightly-colored gear so that other vehicles can see you. Avoid driver blind spots, and use lights and reflectors when riding during the evenings and at night.
- Always wear a helmet, no matter how short your trip.

Wait a minute. Wasn’t Alice Swanson killed because a motor vehicle operator performed an illegal maneuver? Shouldn’t there be an admonition for drivers to act responsibly and safely in this space rather than a tired bit about bicyclists operating safely?

As a dedicated bicycle commuter, I appreciate your inclusion of topics related to bicycle safety. It is a sad fact that I see a great number of adult bicycle riders without a helmet, bright clothing or lights of any kind even in the dark of night. Perhaps you could update the article to include reminders to vehicle drivers to stay out of the bicycle lanes. Motorists should not park, stop or veer into a bicycle lane without checking their rear and side view mirrors first. Also an awareness of bicycles on the road would go a long way toward reducing dangers to bicyclists. Drivers should not only share the road with bicyclists but change their mindset to expect bicyclists on the road. Thanks
