Now that kids have started going back to school, they have the opportunity to play with friends they may not have seen all summer, and with new friends as well. But even though recess might be a highlight of their school day, don’t let the playground be a dangerous part of your child’s good time. According to the National Safety Council (NSC), over 200,000 children are hurt each year, and 15 children will die due to a playground accident. Many of these injuries can be prevented by following some of these tips:
- Make sure surfaces around playground equipment are filled with loose material such as wood chips, mulch, sand, or shredded rubber.
- Check for dangerous hardware like protruding bolts and sharp points or edges in equipment.
- Make sure elevated surfaces such as platforms and ramps have guardrails to prevent falls.
- Make sure swings have soft seats, not metal or wood. Use full-bucket seats for babies and toddlers.
- Remove tripping hazards such as rocks and sticks from the play area.
- Remove hoods and drawstrings from children’s clothing so they don’t get caught in equipment.
- Keep children under four away from climbing equipment such as ladders and nets.
- Always supervise children while they play.
If you feel that any playground equipment or surfacing is outdated or unsafe, report it to the owner or operator.
