The hot weather is here to stay, and that means it’s time to head for the pool. While pools are a perfect way to beat the heat, you should know that pools and kids can be a deadly combination.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), over three hundred kids per year drown in swimming pools, and thousands more are rushed from the pool to the emergency room. Many of the kids that survive are left with serious brain damage.
How can you help prevent a tragedy in your own backyard? The CPSC has these suggestions:
- Always supervise children when they are in or around a pool.
- Fences and walls should be at least 4 feet high and installed completely around the pool. Fence gates should be self-closing and self-latching.
- Install an alarm on all pool area entrances.
- Keep rescue equipment by the pool and be sure a portable phone is poolside with emergency numbers posted.
- If a child is missing, always look in the pool first. Seconds count in preventing death or disability.
- Knowing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) can be a lifesaver. You can get CPR training through your local Red Cross chapter.
Read all of the CPSC’s pool safety suggestions, and never rely on just one. Help keep your pool safe all summer long by using levels of safety protection.

These are all very important things to do when around a pool. You can also give your child survival swimming lessons. Safe Start and Infant Swimming have teamed up to provide more opportunities for children to get the survival skills they need but nothing replaces the constant supervision of an adult when around the water.

Also keep this in mind when you go in a pool there should always be an supervised adult I would post that as a safety rule to all children because if something happens the adult will be right there to take immediate action
