Having fun in the snow is big business. According to the National Sporting Goods Association, 10.6 million people visited ski and snowboard resorts last winter. Fortunately skiing is relatively safe. The National Ski Areas Association reports an average of 37 deaths annually from ski and snowboard accidents as compared to 3600 swimming-related and 1000 bicycle relates fatalities. But many more accidents do happen and enjoying yourself on a force as great as snow-covered mountain still requires some pre-planning and vigilance on the slope. Remember to dress yourself and your family in layers (wearing something waterproof on the outermost layer) to ensure you’ll keep warm. Also, make sure your equipment is in workable condition and check the weather before hitting the chairlifts. Here are some more tips from the National Safety Council:
- Get in shape. You’ll enjoy skiing more if you’re physically fit.
- The best way to become a good skier or snowboarder is to take a lesson from a qualified instructor.
- The key to successful skiing/snowboarding is control. To have it, you must be aware of your technique, the terrain and the skiers/snowboarders around you.
- Be aware of the snow conditions and how they can change. As conditions turn firm, the skiing can get hard and fast.
- Don’t be afraid to sidestep down the slop if it exceeds your ability level.
- Always avoid alcohol and be careful not to become dehydrated
- Know your limits. Learn to ski and snowboard smoothly-and in control. Stop before you become fatigued.
Skiing or snowboarding can be a great form of exercise and a fun family activity as long as you obey weather warnings and the directions of mountain safety officials. For more ways to have fun and be safe on the slopes, check out the ABCs of Skiing’s and the ABCs of Snowboarding’s tip guide.

Wintertime sports can be fun, but it can also be very dangerous if you don’t prepare yourself to be safe. The best thing to do is to know what is safe and what is not. Skiing can cause injury or death if you don’t know how to ski. Snowboarding can be just as dangerous. learning to participate safely will decrease the risk of injury and make it fun for you and everyone else.
