Avoiding Delays When Traveling

If you travel by air, you know how inconvenient it can be to have your flight delayed. You might not have much control over most issues that cause delays, such as weather or maintenance, but is there anything you can do in advance to minimize your chances of delay?

Travelers sometimes make the mistake of not reviewing the details of their trip, which could lead to errors in their ticketing. Minor errors on your flight reservation used to be an easy fix at the counter when a customer checked in. Now, with tighter security and rising airfares, even the most insignificant discrepancy can cause you a big problem or result in extra fees.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) points out a few tips you should keep in mind when embarking, to help make your trip as smooth as possible.

  • Arrive at the airport on time. This might vary by airline and day of travel, so make sure to check with your carrier in advance. Give yourself plenty of time to get through security.
  • Check to make sure your name is spelled correctly on your boarding pass and ticket. All adults need valid government issued ID to enter the security checkpoint, and the name on your ID must match the name on your ticket.
  • Check in advance for restrictions on baggage weights, and number of items you can carry with you on the plane.
  • Take your infants and children out of strollers and carry them with you through the magnetometer.
  • Dress appropriately for travel. Certain clothing will set off screening machines, so avoid clothes, jewelry and accessories that contain metal to avoid a delay.
  • Think before you speak. Belligerent behavior, inappropriate jokes and threats are taken seriously and could result in delays or being detained.
