Child Passenger Seat Safety: Step-by-Step

Though many parents try to do the right thing for their kids when purchasing a child safety seat, many don’t buy the right size seat or install the seat properly.  This puts the child in the same danger as having no seat at all.  Therefore, it’s a good idea to purchase the seat from a store that will allow you to take the seat to your car and have it installed.  This ensures that the seat is safe and is right for your child.

As your child grows older, the style of seating will need to adapt to his or her size.  Here are the four stages of safe seating:

  1. Rear-facing Safety Seat - Infants up to at least 18 to 24 months, up to 30-35 lbs.
  2. Forward Facing Seat in a Five-point Harness - Over 18 months, up to 40-80 lbs.
  3. Booster Seat - Up to 8+ years, over at least 35-40 lbs.
  4. Seatbelt that Fits Well -  Over 8-10 years.

If you follow the instructions found in the safety seat manual and the car seat section of your vehicle owner’s manual, chances are you’re going to do a good job protecting your child.  If you need help with installation, check out the Safe Kids website where you can find service centers in your area and other information about car seat safety.
