As the summer travel season gets under way, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has warned that the national terror threat level is high, or orange, for all domestic and international flights. That means the current threat is only one level below severe—the highest danger. Airlines are scaling back flights this year, and airports will be more crowded. With still over 200 million passengers flying this summer, do you know how all of these factors might affect your family’s travel plans? Are you doing your part to protect your family from a safety threat? If you are planning on taking a flight this summer, there are a few things you need to be thinking about before you head to the airport to help keep you and your family safe.
The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is running a campaign called Know Before You Go, to help you figure out in advance what you can and can’t take on the plane, and what you should be checking in with your luggage. Any liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in a three-ounce or smaller container, carried in a single one-quart zip-top bag. Being prepared before checking in and cooperating with security staff saves time and makes it easier for them to do their job, helping you arrive safely.
But in addition to TSA regulations, here are a few basic but critical tips you should always think about when traveling to help stop a potentially dangerous situation from occurring:
- Always stay alert, and take notice of your surroundings.
- Never take a package from a stranger and never leave your luggage unattended.
- Report any suspicious item or activity to local authorities immediately.
- Create an emergency plan for you and your family.
