Wednesday July 18, 2007 is National Ride Your Motorcycle to Work Day. Here are some tips from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to help prevent accidents between cars and motorcycles.
Drivers:
- Remember that a motorcycle counts as a full vehicle on the highway. Give them the same respect, including a full lane to travel in.
- Look out for motorcycles making left turns, changing lanes, or coming through intersections.
- Don’t tailgate motorcycles – they may need to move quickly to avoid accidents ahead.
Motorcyclists:
- Over two-thirds of motorcycle accidents are caused by drivers of cars. Always ride defensively.
- Make sure you are visible to other vehicles. Wear protective gear that makes you stand out.
- Avoid drivers’ blind spots and always make sure they see you.
- Make lane changes gradually, and always signal.
- Never share a lane with a car.

I/we have absolute confidence in YOUR driving. We just worry about those other drivers.

We always have to look out for the other guy. I a vehicle, the size of a red 1992 Buick Skylark, can be broadsided and totaled, like mine was a couple months age, a motorcycle is an easy target. Most experienced bikers develope an amaising periferal vision, but the 4 wheelers can still sneak up on you.
Keep the sunny side up,
