Get Tsunami Ready

Since the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 2004, which killed nearly 300,000 people, this devastating natural disaster has been occurring more frequently all around the globe. Follow these tips from the National Weather Service to prevent tragedy in the face of a tsunami.

  • A tsunami travels at 450-600 mph, so DO NOT plan on outrunning it.
  • Tsunamis do not crash like waves, they just keep coming. Get at least 2 miles inland or 100 feet above sea level at the first sign of a tsunami.
  • If you live within a mile of the coast, have an evacuation plan ready that allows you to get away within fifteen minutes of a warning.
  • Contact your local officials to see if there is a government-sponsored evacuation plan for your area.
  • Practice your evacuation plan at night in case a tsunami happens after sundown.
  • Keep a disaster kit go-bag ready to take with you in the event of evacuation.

For more information check out the National Weather Service’s Tsunami Ready website.

I live off the puget sound area. Will a Tsunami effect our area? If so, who do I contact? What should I do to get ready?
Thank you.
Sincerely,
Nancy
