Practice Defensive Flying During Your Holiday Travels

As Thanksgiving approaches, more than 40 million Americans are expected to travel at least 50 miles from home over the holiday long weekend. Whether you travel by road or by air, there are always considerations you need to make in advance to ensure you and your family have the safest trip possible.

Just like defensive driving, here are a couple of tips from AAA for defensive flying:

  • Go online before leaving home. Check your airline’s website for any delays or changes before you leave home. Also, make sure to review the Transportation Security Administration site for airport security rules, before you get to the airport.
  • Know the limitations of your ticket. Your ticket may have different restrictions for delays and cancellations due to weather or mechanical problems.
  • Pack Defensively. Prepare for flight delays by packing portable entertainment such as music, books, magazines, or video games for you or your kids. Be sure to keep any items such as prescriptions, ID and/or passports, credit cards, tickets and itinerary in a carry-on bag.
  • Take the earliest flight. Earlier flights are less likely to be delayed. If you are delayed, this also gives you a better chance of catching a flight later in the day.
