The July 2007 summer heat wave is here, and all across the nation, people are wondering what they can do to beat the heat. The risks with heat are far more serious than you may think - an average of 1500 people each year die from heat related health problems.
Here at the AMW Safety Center, we are committed to bringing you the answers to your safety questions and preventing tragedy for you and your family. Here are some tips from the National Weather Service about how to minimize the risk of the summer sun.
- Drink plenty of water to keep hydrated.
- Avoid caffeine and alcoholic beverages - they tend to dehydrate you.
- Wear light colored clothing - it reflects sunlight.
- Avoid excessive exercise, even if you’re in good shape.
- Do NOT leave pets or children in a parked car, even if the window is cracked.
- Keep children and the elderly indoors as much as possible - they are the most sensitive to heat.
- If your home is not equipped to deal with heat, find a local cooling center. This can be a mall, a movie theater, or anywhere with public water and air conditioning.
